Sunderland transfer target Fabio Borini has joined Liverpool’s pre-season tour of the United States.
A fee of around £14m has been agreed between the clubs for Borini, who spent last season on loan at the Stadium of Light.
Gus Poyet said on Saturday he hoped to open talks with the 23-year-old striker, but Borini has travelled to the States in an apparent indication he intends to fight for a place at Anfield.
Liverpool have lost Luis Suarez from their attacking options, but Rickie Lambert has been recruited and Loic Remy could soon join him.
A bid of £8.5m triggered a release clause in Remy’s QPR contract, and he now has permission to talk to last season’s Premier League runners-up.
